A gentle wash-day routine: scalp care without the scrub

A useful wash-day routine starts with what your hair and scalp need. More tools and harder scrubbing are not automatically better. Keep the basics familiar, then decide whether an extra accessory earns a place beside your shampoo.

Start with the basics

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying shampoo to the scalp and choosing how often to wash according to your hair and scalp. Conditioner placement depends on hair type: the ends may need particular attention. Its guide also recommends handling wet hair gently. Read the AAD hair-care guidance.

Set your usual shampoo, conditioner and a clean towel within reach. Take off jewelry that could catch your hair. If you are trying an unfamiliar product, check its directions before using it together with anything else.

Where a scalp brush fits

A palm scalp brush is an optional shampoo accessory. Its grip gives you a way to hold the tool while its flexible bristles contact the scalp. Start with light pressure, work gently and avoid tangling hair around the brush. Rinse and dry it according to the supplied care instructions.

Choose your exact color or pack and check the selected contents before buying. The styled pink photo shows one brush; a different option may include more pieces. Styling surfaces and shampoo are not included.

Keep comfort as the guide

Stop if a tool feels uncomfortable. Do not use it on broken or irritated skin. A scalp brush does not treat hair loss, dandruff or a scalp condition. Persistent itching, irritation or unexpected shedding is a reason to speak with a qualified healthcare professional rather than add more pressure.

A good routine is one you can repeat comfortably. Keep the tool clean, store it where it can dry and let the care basics do their work.
